Gold Panning!!

I used to go gold panning.. so much fun.  But that was with my last husband, and many years ago. We would go 4 times a year, spring and fall... before kids got out of school and after they went back to school. The reason for that was because we liked the one particular place and if we went when school was out, it was crowded with people,  but when we went no one was there but us!! It was wonderful!

Here is a picture of me down at the river 'doing my thing'  lol

I didn't have a good camera way back then so sorry that it isn't very good,  but,  that is me gold-panning.  :)

We kept a box in the back of the camper that had our gold pans,  old sneakers to wear in the water, bug repellent, bandanna to tie back my hair, tweezers, and little skinny bottles with cork stoppers to drop the little specks of gold into.  Those things were always there just in case, at anytime we decided to do this.

Speaking of bug repellent.. there were some bees there that I loved!  There were some sweet-smelling plants out in the water and these bees loved it there. But when I sat down on the edge of the river, they came over to check me out. They would sit on my knees and it was like they just watched me pan,  even pretty dragonflies would do that.. they'd sit on the edge of my pan and watch.  Of course I would talk to them and the bees.  Some times the bees would sort of bumble up and down my legs, just checking me out!!  They never, ever stung me!! They were big fat ones but they weren't Bumble Bees.

When we pulled in somewhere, my husband would start setting up the camp site,  but I would grab my pan and stuff and run down to the river!!  I couldn't wait! lol  After awhile he would call out to me, 'coffee's ready'! I'd go back and he'd be sitting on the picnic table, the radio playing some cool music and sipping his coffee.

At the place we wound up at most often there was a limb hanging from a tree right close to the picnic table.  When he would turn the music on, even if we were sitting right there, the birds would come and sit on that limb right by us and just sing and chirp with the music. I thought it was amazing! That's why it was my favorite spot to go to...  and because of the bees and dragonflies! lol

I am so hoping I can find a picture or two from back then to include on here.  We shall see.  I know I did have some stuck in a folder on my PC  somewhere.. besides the one at the top of here.

We would of course have our dog Duke with us. I'll post a picture of him too. He was big!  Once when he was gone on one of his adventures he came back stinking like horrible garbage and we wondered what he had gotten into!!  We started in the direction he came from to check it out, and he took off and showed us where he had been... an old, long-dead dear!  He had been nosing around in it..  wallowing in it, I think!!!

We had to get into the river,  all three of us, and get him cleaned off!!  Of course later on,  while I was floating around on a raft he thought it would be great fun to dump me off of it,  which he did!! LOL He slept inside the camper because I didn't want him getting into trouble during the night!

Well,  I have hunted and hunted for the pictures I wanted to show..  one of my dog ... but I can't find them!!!

I'm going to go for now..

Hope you enjoyed this even without the pictures...

                          See you next time.............

  3. What a wonderful and wholesome story! I also enjoy outdoor activities and connecting with nature. I even installed a bird bath to attract some birds. I really like the part about spending quality time with your family because it sounds like such a wholesome and memorable time. I look forward to hearing more of these interesting stories!

  7. Hi grandma, Lorena here!

Gold-panning sounds like a lot of fun! I'm getting the gold rush just by reading about it - too bad I'm like +100 years late - my only experience digging for gold is when a friend gave me a bag of dirt for my birthday which contained some gold. I think you can buy those on Amazon! (actually you can! The one I found is called "Alaskan Gold Paydirt") I did NOT get rich from mine, but oh well.

I can visualize the entire scene, before reading it completely I figured your dog probably found some decomposing fruit, animal or poop and rolled on it. For some reason, the stinkier it is the more they seem to like it.

I have a cat, and he isn't very problematic while going outside. There was one time he brought back a dead bird which he hid under the couch. When I was cleaning (the apartment smelled funky) I reached for it thinking he had pushed one of his toys under the couch, I grabbed it. Imagine how mortified I felt when I realized that wasn't a toy but a decomposing bird..! Other than that, he's had a few close calls with skunks, thankfully so far we haven't had any skunk-related incidents.

I love your blog, I've said it before but I think it's such an underrated format and I appreciated being able to read it at my own pace whenever I have some time. If you have any more stories like this, I'd love to read about them. It sounds like you were having a very lovely time there.

    Take care!

    1. Hi Lorena!!
I have so enjoyed reading you comment!! Thank you!!
Siting out in nature, scooping up the dirt out of a river, washing in until you see tiny gold lumps in the black dirt (which is what's left after the 'washing') , so much more fun than picking gold out of a sack of dirt, at home, which someone else acquired. lol But I must say, that would be a cool birthday gift for someone who had not been gold-panning!!
My dog was so sweet, but loved to get into things, and so loving!! I wish he could have lived forever, but at about 14 years old he died of old age. I didn't have another one after him. I had two or three before him, though.
I'm glad you are enjoying the Blog.. I'm having a lot of fun writing in it!!!

  9. Morning grandma! Well it is 7:30pm for me lol so good evening!!

This was such a lovely story, i don't have any experience when it comes to gold panning although a while back I was thinking of getting pans and everything I needed as my parents own 10 acres of land out in the countryside with two rivers, one maybe a metre wide and the other about 2 metres wide which pass through the land. I had figured that perhaps there was some gold to be panned for as I remember finding fossils and the likes exploring around there as a young child, maybe 5 or 6.

You had said about a deer, I have always loved deers since I was very little but in Ireland there is nothing of the sorts nearby, even in the country unless you go to the far outskirts into the mountains. The smell mustve been horrible, one of the sheep that my dad had been taking care of over the spring died a while back and the smell was terrible and didnt go away for weeks!

    Well apologies for the ramblings!!

I'm so glad you enjoy reading my 'stuff'!! Just keep coming back! (You're still Guppy to me! :) )
I'll bet that was fun exploring around the stream in that large an acreage of land!!
Hummm ... I wonder why there aren't any dear for so far, unless it's mostly farm land of some kind, or something, where they would get 'spooked'.
      Later,

  10. You have so many marvelous adventures to write about. I'm only 70, but probably have a lot of stories to tell. I am just not sure they are as interesting as your stories. You have got me to thinking that perhaps I should just start a blog and write stories down so that my grandkids can have them to remember me by some day when I am no longer around! Thank you for the inspiration.

    1. Yes, Alyse, everyone has stories from their life. I truly think that you should do that, start a Blog and write everything that you can come up with that you could wrap into a little story, so it will be there for them. Doesn't matter if anyone else reads it, you will be giving your grandkids a view into your life. I dearly wish I had something like that, because I know nothing about my past relatives! AND, being the youngest (way younger!) of all my brothers and sisters, I don't really know all that much about them!! I hope this will inspire you more, help you know how important that is. :)

  11. Hi Grandma!

Waiting for the perfect time to go to your favourite spot is super smart! It's much better to be there when the crowds are gone!

I absolutely love that picture of you out there, feet in the water and pan in hand! I've never actually panned for gold but as a kid growing up in the country, I spent plenty of time down at the creek running my fingers through the soft, silty sand and seeing the sparkle of what we called fools gold.

It sounds like you were a traveling gold panner and why not, you could come upon a good spot and you're ready to go!

Your story about the bees and dragonflies is so sweet! I can imagine you by the water with these tiny visitors coming to see what you're up to! Then followed by the birds making a social call to hear your music, isn't nature just the best?!

Your dog Duke sounds a bit like our dog Heidi, always into something. I have an extremely vivid memory of her returning from a trip to our neighbours farm, her furry chest fur covered and dripping wet with something dark. Once she was closer I could smell something terrible and it turned out she was carrying a dead, rotting piglet in her mouth... Pretty sure she rolled on it too! That is an smell I will never forget, it was horrendous!

I'm sorry you didn't find the pictures you wanted to show but the stories leave me imagining wonderful days by the water enjoying the company of loved ones and dear pets, who could ask for more!!

Have a great rest of your day! xox Chris <3

Oh, I love nature, and the bees and such were so sweet and gentle I couldn't be afraid, and they never stung!! They were just curious and wanted to hang out! lol
Another story about my dog... he was teasing me and deliberately tipped my pad that I was floating on in the river, dumping me in, and we started playing (which is why he did it!!) but another time I accidently fell over off of it and he acted frantic and even got hold of my clothes and started pulling me out (so I let him) then told him how proud I was of him!! He could tell the difference between playing and something serious!! I thought that was pretty cool!!!

    2. I absolutely love talking with you too! I think we have some similar interests! :D

Photography certainly has improved but there's just something so special about old pictures...

Where I grew up we had a neighbour who had honey bees and we had a small apple orchard that they would come to in droves. They had no interest in stinging us with countless blossoms to choose from. It was a great place to grow up and I can almost smell the blossoms!

I think Duke sounds like a fun and smart dog, who was also protective towards you... now, that's a good boy!

Duke was so sweet, loving, protective, fun, adventurous, imaginative etc.!! We use to snuggle up together on the floor and take a nap.. our arms/legs around each other!! I was not a young kid!!!!! lol He use to invent his own games to play and then I'd get down in the floor and play it with him!!

  12. Oh that sounds so idyllic, it sounds like you were practically living in Skyrim! :D

I've never gotten to go gold-panning, but I did go caving with the parents (and tour group) where they would take you deep underground, and shut off all the lights for a moment to show you "true darkness" (where I probably had my first panic attack, lol) and they had a lot of interesting rock formations down there. AND, I did get to buy a huge lump of gold on the way out at the gift shop. I thought, of course, as all kids do, that it was real until my mom had to alert me that it was just that fool's gold. ;(

Duke sounds awesome! Reminds me of how I loved my Lassie. I'm almost ready to get another dog... as soon as I get out of this apartment, cause it wouldn't be fair to keep her trapped up here.

Hope you have a happy afternoon, Grandma Shirley!

Cheers and good wishes from SC,

    1. I would never keep a dog in an apartment either!! I'm glad you don't!!
There is a lot of floating fools good. There was that floating in the water in the pan and as you swirl the water around it just runs off... and if there is any bits of gold you don't have to worry about it washing off, it is heavy, and just sinks deeper into the sand as you wash rocks and stuff off. When you get everything washed off you are left with black sand and you start seeing the little bits of gold sunk down in that. That's when I always get excited! lol

  16. You must have been a real life Snow White with all those bees and dragonflies around you Grandma! Did you ever find much gold and did you end up keeping it or trying to sell it? I imagine that little specs of gold wouldn't sell for much but I'm not an expert on the subject lol! Duke also seemed like a very intelligent dog, always finds his way back! 1. I'm not sure I understand Rencie. Sure if you go to the right places. When you camp out by a river you can stick you pan in anywhere, why not? You just need to be in the right area where gold would actually be trickling down through the water from some mountain that would have gold in it. :)

    2. Okay, I'd love to do that, Grandma, got an exceptional area by the Delaware Water Gap to do so, it's a while from me but I don't mind trying something brand new. That's why I asked.

  18. Searching for gold, with a pan is something I have only ever seen in movies, or read about in books. You are (at least to my bad memory) the first person I know who I know has done it! I think I have like a very vague memory of them having a game of panning gold in an amusment park here in norway that I was at as a kid, but I am not sure if its still a thing. Wishing you the best of days Grandma!

Wow, great story and very nice picture! As a child I read all the stories about gold digging, gold panning and golden fever in America in 19th century (often quite a romantic tales). 23. Hello Grandma!

Thank you for the story, that sounds like a great time! Especially just relaxing with nature and enjoying some tunes, not to mention the joy of having a spot to yourself. How many flakes were you able to scavenge? Do you still have the droppers?

    ReplyDelete
  24. First, it wasn't flakes it was little specks of nuggets. We would drop them into tiny, skinny, cork stoppered tubes. My husband is passed away.. many years ago.. and when going through his things I kept an eye out for those but never saw them. He may have cashed them in.

  25. This is an amazing story, did you ever wind up finding anything? I love big dogs, they are so sweet and such babies!! lol He always made me laugh, even after rolling in a rotten animal!!
I'm glad you like my stories and can "see" them. If I'm reading a book and it isn't written well enough to make me 'see' what's going on without too much lavish description, then I put it down and won't read it. lol

  28. Oh my, now this put such a wide smile on my face!!! 🥰🥰🥰
Honestly, hunting for gold sounds cool enough, but I absolutely love the way you describe the place - I was almost transported there in person, reading your delightful reminiscing of it 😁😊

Have you ever done anything with the gold specks you found? Melt them, make them into a ring, whatever? (I have no idea what the usual thing to do with your findings is, lol. Keep it as a memento in a bottle?) 😁

And oh myyy, the birds! The bees! That sat on you!! Whenever I watch bumblebees in our garden, I always hope they will land on my palm, because they are so gorgeous and fuzzy! Friend-shaped, really 😁
And your husband setting up the picnic and you drinking coffee with the music and the birds - sounds like a piece of heaven on Earth, really ❤️
(Also, haha, totally agree that it's best to visit such places on workdays and such. Crowds are a bother, even though I am glad people want to spend time outside, still! 😁)

When we venture to our favourite river-valley/creek/forest place, I love to look for crayfish there - them returning means the water is clean and good enough, after all 😊

Oh, I laughed out loud when you mentioned Duke's smelly adventure! 😆
Yes, leave it to our canine companions to always find the smelliest, dirtiest, most gross spot around, anywhere.....and then roll in it happily 😂
(And possibly eat some for good measure, lol.)

But we still love them ❤️

Loved that pic of you by the river, will keep hoping you'll stumble across some dog photos, too 😁

A lovely blog! Thank you for sharing the memories with us!
